John Manuel on Kyle Gibson

November 23, 2010

In his blog post today, Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star Tribune posted a part of a scouting report from John Manuel of Baseball America.  Below is what he had to say about the Twins number 1 ranked prospect:

In 2011, he likely will be asked to pitch in the major league rotation at some point, especially if Minnesota loses free agent Carl Pavano. Gibson is all but assured of a nonroster invitation to spring training, though he’ll probably open the season back in Triple-A and be first in line for a promotion if and when a need arises. The Twins see him as a future No. 2 starter on a playoff club—he’d need more fastball to qualify as a true ace—and even more skeptical scouts outside the organization see him as no worse than a No. 3

There is no doubt in my mind that Gibson will be a solid pitcher in MLB.  It remains to be seen if he has the stuff to be a solid number 2 starter.  I also have no doubt he will be asked to contribute in 2011 as he has been on the fast track to the big leagues much as Scott Baker and Matt Garza were.  I am assuming he will receive an invite to big league camp during 2011 Spring Training.  Hopefully we will be able to get a look at him on some televised games (hint, hint FSNorth.  More spring training games this year!)
