Brewers and Nats out in front for Pavano

November 19, 2010

According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe the Brewers and Nationals are “out in front” as the favorite to sign Carl Pavano.  He tweeted the following yesterday:

@nickcafardo: #Milwaukee and #Washington out front in Carl Pavano sweepstakes

This does not surprise me as I don’t think the Twins are willing to give him the 3 years $33 million he wants, teams like the Nationals and Brewers are in desperate need of veteran pitching and it doesn’t surprise me that they are willing to outbid the Twins for Pavano’s services.

With the Twins reported interest in Brandon Webb, it wouldn’t shock me if the Twins let Pavano walk and take the first round draft pick compensation they would receive from whoever signs Pavano.  If Webb could be had for somewhere in the $3 million-$4 million range on a 1 year deal, I think it would be the right move.  Only if that extra money that Pavano would get is used to upgrade the team in other areas.  There are still a few other veteran pitchers on the market that the Twins could look to add.
